U.S. Army Soldiers with Civil Affairs, in support of Southern European Task Force Africa (CA SETAF-AF) and Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), assisted with a library dedication ceremony of a new PK-12 school library at Djibouti City, Djibouti, May 19, 2021.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Terrence L. Koudelka, CJTF-HOA deputy commanding general, Liz Canellakis, public diplomacy officer for the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, and the local school director joined the event, which celebrated the completion and handover of the U.S.-funded construction project.

“This library shows our gratitude and interest in helping to educate Djiboutian children because they are the future of Djibouti,” said Koudelka. “On behalf of the United States, the U.S. Embassy, the men and women of Camp Lemonnier, thank you for being able to help further the education of these children.”

The civil affairs team brought children’s books, pencils, solar lights and other supplies to add to the school’s new library.

This project created local jobs and was built by a Djiboutian construction company employing Djiboutian laborers. U.S. Soldiers with CJ-4, engineers in support of CJTF-HOA, assisted with the inspections of the building and civil affairs soldiers worked with the many sources needed to bring the project together.

“This is an important project,” said Capt. Sultan Durzi, a team chief with Civil Affairs. “It’ll last long term and really help to make a difference.”

This library is one of the three completed in Djibouti, with three more currently in the works.
