Alaska Army National Guard Col. Kurt Rorvik, commander of U.S. Army Area Support Group-Balkans, carries the American flag at the front of an Extortion 17 memorial ruck march hosted by Task Force Aviation at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, Aug. 9, 2026. U.S. and multinational service members completed the march in honor of the 38 people killed when Extortion 17, a U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter, was shot down in Afghanistan Aug. 6, 2011. Among those killed was Colorado Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 5 David Carter, a CH-47 pilot and friend and mentor to members of 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment (General Support Aviation Battalion). The event honored the fallen while reinforcing solidarity, resilience and unit cohesion among participating service members. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Seth LaCount)
