Joshua Munoz, with the 315th Forward Support Company, 416th Theater Engineer Command, Joint Task Force-Southern Border in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, observes watercraft activity through a spotting scope during a maritime observation mission at Amistad Reservoir in Del Rio, Texas, Aug. 23, 2026. Long-range optical observation provides an additional means of monitoring maritime traffic and maintaining situational awareness along the international boundary. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
