An aerial photograph of a gray naval warship bearing hull number 964 underway at speed in open blue ocean waters. The vessel appears to be a Spruance-class destroyer, identifiable by its distinctive superstructure layout, twin masts, and helicopter flight deck at the stern. The ship is producing a visible white wake as it moves through moderately calm seas beneath a partly cloudy sky.

The Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS) cruises off the coast of Port Hueneme, California, on June 10. The Spruance-class destroyer recently marked the 50th anniversary of its commissioning as USS Paul F. Foster (DD 964) on Feb. 21, 1976. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division began operating the now-decommissioned vessel as the SDTS in 2006 to test naval weapons and combat systems. (U.S. Navy photo by Eric Parsons)
