The Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS) participates in deck landing qualifications with a helicopter crew from Oxnard, California-based Aspen Helicopters Inc. off the coast of Port Hueneme on June 10. The SDTS, an asset of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, relies on helicopters to offload personnel before live-fire testing, when the Spruance-class destroyer operates via remote control to avoid risking injury to its crew.
