A U.S. Green Beret assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) conducts a strike coordination and reconnaissance mission to execute a kinetic strike on a simulated enemy airfield from a mountainside during Operation Close Shave as part of exercise Red Flag near Fort Greely, Alaska, June 3, 2026. During Red Flag, SF units conduct discrete operations designed to blend in with the local populace. For decades, Red Flag has provided aircrews the opportunity to train against realistic threats in a contested environment, building experience and confidence before facing real-world adversaries, while ground forces practice identifying and destroying ground-based air defense systems.
