Ken Ostrom, Prince of Wales District Deputy Ranger, stands in an overgrown stand of young growth trees on Prince of Wales Island, in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, Sept. 25, 2025. This stand is characterized by high stems per acre, high height-to-diameter ratios, and minimal understory development. Precommercial thinning treatment will decrease competition among remaining trees, leading to better growth rates and increased understory development to support wildlife.
