An overgrown stand of young growth trees occupies a site on Prince of Wales Island, within the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, Sept. 25, 2025. The stand is characterized by high stems per acre, high height-to-diameter ratios, and minimal understory development. Precommercial thinning treatment will decrease competition among remaining trees, leading to better growth rates and increased understory development to support wildlife.
