Ken Ostrom, Prince of Wales District Deputy Ranger, points to a healthy stand of young growth trees on Prince of Wales Island, in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, Sept. 25, 2025. The stand received precommercial thinning treatments which decreased competition among remaining trees, leading to better growth rates and increased understory development to support wildlife.
