Ken Ostrom, Prince of Wales District Deputy Ranger, points to a trio of young growth trees that have grown into each other on Prince of Wales Island, in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, Sept. 25, 2025. This stand is characterized by high stems per acre, high height-to-diameter ratios, and minimal understory development. Precommercial thinning treatment will decrease competition among remaining trees, leading to better growth rates and increased understory development to support wildlife.
