A U.S. Army Green Beret assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) observes a crowd during a simulated military assisted departure, MAD, as part of exercise Sage Eagle 25-4 at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, August 26, 2025. A MAD is a coordinated effort to evacuate U.S. citizens and other designated personnel from a foreign country when their safety is threatened.
Exercise Sage Eagle is a recurring, battalion-sized, unconventional warfare exercise that validates Special Forces’ ability to train and incorporate partner forces in unfamiliar environments. Sage Eagle’s stressful, realistic training prepares Air National Guard defenders for rapidly securing contingency locations while shifting their mindset towards the operational demands of complex evolving environments.
