Edward H. Morrissette, a veteran of the Second World War who served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, recollects while at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, May 25, 2023. Morrissette, who fought with the Big Red One throughout North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes, was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts during the Tunisian Campaign. He turned 100 on Thursday, July 26, 2023.

“I think I hit the plane,” said Morrissette. “When he started diving on us I had sent the other guys down the hill to the chow truck to get a meal and I stayed on the gun while they were down there. That plane came over and I opened up on him. They said I hit the plane. I didn’t see it hit. He dropped a bomb and he killed one of the commander’s jeep drivers that dived under his jeep for protection and the bomb hit the jeep.”
