Edward H. Morrissette, a veteran of the Second World War who served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, recollects while at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, May 25, 2023. Morrissette, fought with the Big Red One throughout North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, July 26, 2023.

“I went into the Army from Virginia,” said Morrissette. “I walked and I hitchhiked from Virginia Beach to New York City. I hocked a brand new raincoat that I had, a trench coat, to get me some spending money. Then I got on the ferry and went over to Governor’s Island and Fort Jay. A young Second Lt. had us on the parade ground at midnight and we had to go to the bay and get a helmet full of water, come back to the parade field and shave with nothing but that water. That was my introduction into the Army.”
