Edward H. Morrissette, a veteran of the Second World War who served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, poses for a photo with his son Mark at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, May 25, 2023. Morrissette, who fought with the Big Red One throughout North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, July 26, 2023.

“There were so many of us on that Queen Mary that some of us would sleep on the deck and part of us would sleep down in the hole in the bunks,” said Morrissette. “The next night we’d switch. I think it took us five days to go across [the Atlantic] on the Queen Mary.”
