Edward H. Morrissette, a veteran of the Second World War who served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, smiles while at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, May 25, 2023. Morrissette, who fought with the Big Red One throughout North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, July 26, 2023.

“We got behind that damn pillar,” said Morrissette. “I must have sat behind that for twenty to twenty-five minutes. There was another guy there too. It got to the point where I couldn’t stand it anymore so I started crawling out from behind that concrete thing and that guy was still there. I turned around and crawled back and said, ‘c’mon man we gotta get out of here and join the outfit.’”
