Edward H. Morrissette, a veteran of the Second World War who served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, smiles while at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, May 25, 2023. Morrissette, who fought with the Big Red One throughout North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, July 26, 2023.

“I had to go down to Florida to meet the outfit and join in the maneuvers,” said Morrissette. “Airplanes were coming across throwing sacks of flower down on us. Can you imagine if one of those sacks hit you in the head? They thought that was the decent thing to do, use sacks of flower as imitation bombs.”
