Edward H. Morrissette, a veteran of the Second World War who served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, speaks about wading through the tide while under heavy machine gun fire during the invasion of Normandy while at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, May 25, 2023. Morrissette, who fought with the Big Red One throughout North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes, turned 100 on Thursday, July 26, 2023.
“On the invasion, it was my buddy and I,” said Morrissette. “We had to take a roll of communication wire. We had a rod and pipe through the wire wheel. We were holding it up as we were wading into shore. The damn machine guns started honing in on that damn roll of wire and we said we’re going to drop that sucker now and if they want to communicate with us they’re going to have to holler.”
