JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 8, 2019) – Cmdr. George Mendes, Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s chaplain, leads a prayer during morning colors. Mendes, a native of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, says, “As we celebrate the 244th anniversary of the Navy Chaplain Corps, I’m reminded of our unique calling to serve the spiritual needs of our Navy and Marine Corps family. I have the privilege of being with people in their place of need, often when life seems to be at its most difficult. My reward is simply being able to come alongside my shipmates and their families and by the grace of God, help them come to a better place in their lives. I believe that this is how I help our patients and staff here at Naval Hospital Jacksonville— by offering compassion, encouragement, and spiritual care when it’s needed the most.” The Navy Chaplain Corps celebrates its 244th birthday on Nov. 28. It includes over 800 chaplains from more than 100 faith groups (including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism). Navy Chaplains promote the spiritual, religious, moral, and personal well-being of sailors, Marines, and their families. (U.S. Navy photo by Jacob Sippel, Naval Hospital Jacksonville/Released).
