Cammi Borden, a Neuroscience major at Wright State University, joins us this summer to learn more about cognitive neuroscientific studies.
“My professor and I looked specifically at NAMRU-Dayton because I remembered participating in one of their previous research studies last summer, and I found the environment comfortable and informative,” says Borden. “I knew that I would learn so much from NAMRU-Dayton while enjoying my experience here.”
As a summer volunteer, Borden’s daily tasks allow her to play a significant role in monitoring and running various tests during experiments as well as participate in data collection and analysis.
“I now have a better and deeper understanding of things I have learned in my neuroscience and psychology classes,” says Borden. “Seeing the behind-the-scenes of experiments and the processes involved in getting them to function efficiently has given me a more realistic and accurate understanding.”
Much of her work has been with research psychologist, Dr. Kara Blacker, studying low-oxygen conditions impact on brain activity.
“Without Dr. Blacker and her patience with me as I bombarded her with questions, I wouldn’t have taken away as much as I did from this experience,” says Borden.
After her summer volunteer position, Borden hopes to continue on a research path and pursue a graduate program in neuropsychology or psychophysics.
