Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton's (NAMRU-Dayton) motion capture lab welcomed Jacob Jadischke, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education intern and mechanical engineering student to spend the summer expanding his skill set.

“This opportunity gives me experience in the research field for the first time. Helping with research that has the potential to improve the quality of warfighter’s lives provides a gratification not readily available in other types of work,” says Jadischke.

Assisting Dr. Peter Le, a biomechanical engineer and lead investigator for our Spine Health Improvement Program, Jadischke navigates research fundamentals including data collection, data processing and equipment testing.

“Dr. Le has been fantastic about explaining new concepts throughout the internship,” says Jadischke, “but he has also done a good job of encouraging me to try new ideas and experiment with equipment to see if I can figure it out myself.”

Jadischke's favorite research experience is a study evaluating the usability of exoskeletons by using biomechanical measurements in an effort to aid ergonomic intervention for warfighter performance.

Although Jadischke’s career aspirations veer towards a different path, he remains conscious of the value of integrating different disciplines.

“I’ve gained a better understanding of what is happening to an aircraft pilot from a dynamics perspective,” says Jadischke. “While I aspire to be more of a traditional mechanical engineer as opposed to biomechanical, I believe it is important to understand what kind of effect a mechanical system has on its operator.”

To accomplish his goals, Jadischke plans to complete his mechanical engineering program at Wright State University and eventually pursue a master’s degree in aerospace engineering.
