“Get involved. Go and seek opportunities - they don’t come to you first.” This is one of the many lessons Megan Boltz (left) is learning during her Oak Ridge Institute for Science & Education internship at Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-Dayton).
As a psychology major at Sinclair Community College, Boltz is working with Dr. Lynn Caldwell (right), senior research psychologist, in the fatigue lab and learning the important role military research has in increasing Fleet effectiveness, efficiency and safety.
“One thing I’ve learned from Dr. Caldwell is that it’s not about knowing everything or even a great deal of things,” says Boltz. “It’s about not being afraid to admit you don’t know”.
Her internship has given her opportunities to explore science beyond the realm of psychology. Not only is she training to work on a study examining fatigue effects in combination with other stressors, such as altitude exposure, but she’s also learning to code for a driving task simulation.
Through all the new experiences, Boltz is grateful for the guidance she’s received along the way.
“Being a part of a team and feeling like I can go to people and gain knowledge needed not only for this job, but for furthering my own goals has been my favorite part of this experience,” says Boltz.
Once the summer ends, she hopes to continue her education and earn a bachelor’s in Psychology.
