Opportunities at Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton attract students from all over the country. Such is the case with Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education intern Kasey Bernt, who is finishing her school year with us before graduating with an Applied Physiology and Kinesiology degree at University of Florida
“In school, I completed classwork around clinical environments, but NAMRU-Dayton seemed to offer a chance to learn more about the research environment,” said Bernt. “I am shocked at the variety of research they do here.”
Gaining experience from a variety of studies, Bernt is looking at the effects of aviation environments and stressors on physiology and warfighter performance alongside her on-site mentor, Dr. Dana DiPasquale, a senior research physiologist with NAMRU-Dayton's Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory's (NAMRL) Environmental Physiology Department.
“Dr. DiPasquale offers valuable guidance for me,” said Bernt, “She taught me how to form a research question and how to use that as a starting point to form a paper. She has also introduced me to data interpretation, which was something I had limited background in.”
At the conclusion of her internship, Bernt plans to pursue a medical career and will focus on completing her application for physician’s assistant programs.
