Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-Dayton) is known for our unique research equipment and the talented engineers who keep them running efficiently and effectively. University of Cincinnati student, Chad McCoy, is using his mechanical engineering background to aid our team as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education intern this summer.
“A typical day for me involves modeling and building parts, or designing parts and machines for studies,” said McCoy, “I’ve done a lot, but the most interesting project has been designing equipment to be used in the Disorientation Research Device (DRD).”
His involvement with the DRD (aka Kraken) is alongside his mentor, Jason Whatmore, senior mechanical engineer.
“Jason has taught me about 3D printing, and has really helped me improve my designs and make better part drawings,” said McCoy. “Making sure my designs work for the people who will be using them has been my biggest challenge as an intern. If I didn’t have a mentor, I wouldn’t know when I’m doing something wrong.”
With another year left to obtain his degree, McCoy is excited to take his new knowledge and skills with him as he continues his education and career.
“I feel confident going back to school with more engineering knowledge than I previously had.”
