A culinary competition or evaluation is taking place in a professional kitchen setting. A female chef wearing a name tag reading 'KONOTOP' presents a plated dish to a judge wearing a U.S. Army Food Service patch on his white chef's coat. The judge is evaluating the dish while the competitor takes notes, suggesting a formal military culinary competition.

Pfc. Olena Konotop, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., culinary arts specialist, receives feedback from American Culinary Federation (ACF) judge Hiroshi Noguchi Mar. 13 during the student chef event at the Joint Culinary Training Exercise (JCTE), Fort Lee, Va. Military members competing in student chef event have less than two years in the career field. The 43rd annual JCTE started Mar. 10 at the MacLaughlin Fitness Center and continues until Mar. 15. The exercise, administered by the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence, is the largest ACF-sanctioned competition in North America. This year’s exercise showcased the talent of 237 military chefs from all military services around the globe to include four international teams.
