A chef in full whites and a tall toque is carefully plating a dish during what appears to be a culinary competition. The setting includes a digital countdown timer, institutional signage referencing Fort Hood and the U.S. Army, and a professional kitchen environment with black draping. Two plated dishes are visible on the stainless steel surface being finished with precise garnishing.

Pfc. Olena Konotop, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., culinary arts specialist, puts the finishing touches on her chicken dish Mar. 13 during the student chef event at the Joint Culinary Training Exercise (JCTE), Fort Lee, Va. Military members competing in student chef event have less than two years in the career field. The 43rd annual JCTE started Mar. 10 at the MacLaughlin Fitness Center and continues until Mar. 15. The exercise, administered by the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence, is the largest American Culinary Federation-sanctioned competition in North America. This year’s exercise showcased the talent of 237 military chefs from all military services around the globe to include four international teams.
