A drill instructor of Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, inspects a recruit’s gear before his match during the Pugil Sticks I event at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Feb. 10. Recruits were given protective gear such as a helmet, groin protector and flak jacket for safety. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Alpha Company is scheduled to graduate April 22.
