ATLANTIC OCEAN (March24, 2025) USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) launches a Rolling Airframe Missile during a live-fire exercise while underway. USS Fort Lauderdale is underway conducting training evolutions in support of deployment readiness. Fort Lauderdale is part of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Readiness Group, a force uniquely positioned to deter aggression, project power through presence abroad, and execute contingency missions with its integrated Marine Corps team in support of U.S. strategic interests. The IWO ARG is comprised of its flagship namesake Iwo Jima, the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships USS San Antonio (LPD 17) and USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28).
NORFOLK, VA – In a solemn event, USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) conducted a burial at sea while operating in the Northern Atlantic Ocean on October 25, 2024. This is the first time USS Fort Lauderdale has had the honor of conducting this ceremony.
NORFOLK – In a time-honored tradition, Capt. James A. Quaresimo, the first commanding officer of USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28), was relieved by Capt. Gill McCarthy during a change of command ceremony attended by Navy leadership, family, friends and the crew aboard the ship while in port Naval Station Norfolk, Friday, July 7.
"Man our ship and bring her to life!" said The Honorable Meredith Berger, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment. The crew responded "Aye, aye, ma'am" and ran toward the brow to man the ship as "Anchors Aweigh" played. Crew members took their places, side-by-side, manning the rails as the ship's systems came online symbolizing the ship "coming to life."
