アウグスト・ザンダーはドイツ・ラインラント＝プファルツ州アルテンキルヒェン郡ヘルドルフの生まれで、父は炭鉱で大工として働いていた。自らも少年の頃から炭鉱で働き始め、十六歳のとき鉱山会社の仕事で撮影する写真家の助手を務めたことから、写真に興味を持つようになる。ザンダーは叔父の援助で写真機材を手に入れ、自分の暗室を持つほどの熱の入れようだった。
