U.S. CENTRAL COMMAND AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY – Before maintainers turn a wrench or aircraft take flight, Airmen from one squadron ensure the shelters around them remain safe and mission-ready.
Senior Airman Austin Kirk and Airman 1st Class Sean Stark, 378th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron structural maintenance journeymen, routinely inspect large area maintenance shelters to ensure their structural integrity.
The inspections focus on the tension fabric systems that maintain each shelter’s strength and stability, supporting safe and uninterrupted maintenance operations. During each inspection, these Airmen visually assess the structures’ cables, beams, and anchor points to verify proper tension and identity, wear, or damage.
“The purpose of these inspections is to ensure every structure is safe, secure, and mission-ready,” said Stark. “Flying squadrons store their aircraft in these shelters, and conduct maintenance that keeps their mission going.”
Their work goes beyond simple upkeep; each inspection helps identify potential hazards early, preventing issues that could threaten personnel safety or disrupt mission continuity.
“We’re trying to identify and eliminate potential hazards before they become a risk,” said Staff Sgt. Tyler Vance, 378th ECES structural maintenance craftsman. “It’s crucial for our maintenance personnel to work in comfortable environments as it allows them to operate for longer periods and ensure mission timeliness.”
The 378th ECES Airmen's continued attention to detail keeps maintenance shelters safe and functional, allowing Airmen to repair and service aircraft without delay, critical to conducting and sustaining combat operations across the region.
