The Edward H. Heinemann Award for Outstanding Achievement recognizes NAVAIR individuals and teams who make significant improvements to the design, modification or performance of aircraft and aircraft systems. Sponsored by the Association of Naval Aviation, the award honors the legacy of renowned aircraft designer Edward H. Heinemann.
This year’s recipient, the F/A-18 Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS) Integration Team, successfully integrated an automatic terrain awareness and warning system into the F/A-18 Hornet, advancing aviation safety for naval aviators.
The system addresses controlled flight into terrain, one of tactical aviation’s most persistent hazards. Through technical expertise, rigorous testing and unprecedented collaboration, the team delivered a capability designed to help prevent these events.
The integration provides an additional safeguard for F/A-18 aircrew and supports the continued operational viability of this legendary aircraft.
