An Urban Sky high-altitude balloon carrying an Icarus Apollo R stratospheric fixed wing aircraft launches during a multi-day Special User Demonstration at Orote Airfield on Naval Station Guam, June 24, 2026, to evaluate stratospheric payload deployment capabilities for Valiant Shield 26. The Extended Range Sensing and Effects Company, 3d Multi-Domain Effects Battalion, 3d Multi-Domain Task Force, collaborated with the Icarus Aerospace team to safely test current and new technologies designed to enhance stratospheric sensor capabilities and joint extended communication networks.
This launch was conducted in support of Valiant Shield 2026. Exercises like Valiant Shield allow Pacific Command Joint Forces the opportunity to integrate forces from all branches of service and with our allies to conduct precise, lethal, and overwhelming multi-axis, multi-domain effects that demonstrate the strength and versatility of the joint force and our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
