    A structural support beam and hydraulic jack hold an elevated bridge span in place during bearing replacement work at Kaw Dam near Kaw City, Oklahoma, Aug. 20, 2026.

    The equipment stabilizes the span while crews remove an original rocker bearing and install a new elastomeric bearing secured with a new bolt. The work is part of a project to replace all 32 bridge bearings. Elastomeric bearings have a longer life expectancy than the original rocker bearings and contain no moving metal parts, making them virtually maintenance-free, more resistant to corrosion and better able to absorb shocks and vibrations.
