Michael Crabbe-Jones, a Shop 64 Wood/Shipwrights specialist, finalizes the keel blocks in preparation for the docking of a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) July 7, 2026. Shipwrights play a critical role in docking and undocking operations, configuring more than a hundred massive keel blocks, side blocks, and roll-off blocks within fractions of an inch to match the unique underwater hull shape of each vessel. PHNSY & IMF’s mission is to keep the Navy’s fleet “Fit to Fight" by repairing, maintaining, and modernizing the Navy's fast-attack submarines and surface ships. Strategically located in the heart of the Pacific, it is the most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East.
