NANTUCKET, Mass. — Hull Maintenance Technician 2nd Class Franklin Thurmond, assigned to the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Nantucket (LCS 27), holds a historic harpoon while visiting the Nantucket Whaling Museum in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Aug. 7, 2026. Thurmond was among six USS Nantucket Sailors who traveled from the ship’s homeport of Mayport, Florida, to Nantucket for a namesake visit. The visit provided an opportunity for the Sailors to learn about the island’s maritime and whaling heritage, engage with the local community, and strengthen the enduring relationship between USS Nantucket and the island for which the ship is named.
