A Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) marked with a research flag rests on the rocky shoreline of Poplar Island during a July 1, 2026 site visit by representatives from the Netherlands and French embassies. Poplar Island, a 1,715-acre beneficial reuse project in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Program, provides critical wetland and upland habitat restoration using dredged material from the Port of Baltimore navigation channels. The island supports diverse wildlife populations, including numerous shorebird species.
