Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Lee Forsgren receives information from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District project managers project managers April 30, 2026, about how the active Chickamauga Lock on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has concrete expansion resulting from alkali aggregate reaction between the alkali in the cement and the rock aggregate. The active navigation lock is 360-feet long and 60-feet wide and can only accommodate one barge. When constructed, the new navigation lock will be 600-feet long and 110-feet wide and will handle nine barges per lockage, an increase in efficiency of 800%. It will reduce commercial transit times by 80%. (USACE Photo by Leon Roberts)
