JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — Machinery Mechanic Kenneth Buffa demonstrates valve actuator component maintenance to National Defense University guests during a tour of the inside machine shop at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, April 10, 2026. The visit provided joint warfighters and allied leaders attending NDU firsthand insight into the industrial capabilities required to sustain globally integrated naval operations.

The Inside Machine Shop (Shop 31) houses the non-nuclear machinists that manufacture and refurbish parts and components using an array of machinery for vessels.

PHNSY & IMF’s mission is to keep the Navy’s fleet “Fit to Fight" by repairing, maintaining, and modernizing the Navy's fast-attack submarines and surface ships. Strategically located in the heart of the Pacific, it is the most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East. (U.S. Navy photo by Camey Streff)
