Remaining layers of the mostly-demolished Outer Vapor Container of the former SM-1A nuclear power plant on Fort Greely, Alaska, are visible inside a newly-constructed weather enclosure erected to enable year-round work, November 5, 2025. The thermometer, in fahrenheit, shows an ambient temperature significantly higher than the outdoor temperature, which was recorded at about 20°F with snowy conditions. The Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is home to the USACE Radiological Health Physics Regional Center of Expertise, which provides radiation safety and technical support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies at home and abroad and began the decommissioning and dismantlement of SM-1A in 2024.
