The DNPPP was developed to safeguard, maintain, and perform environmental radiation monitoring for the legacy "Army Nuclear Power Program," which concluded in 1978. The Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is home to the USACE Radiological Health Physics Regional Center of Expertise, which provides radiation safety and technical support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies at home and abroad and began the decommissioning and dismantlement of SM-1A in 2024.
