Remaining layers of the mostly-demolished Outer Vapor Container (and the exterior of the Inner Vapor Container) of the former SM-1A nuclear power plant on Fort Greely, Alaska, are visible inside a newly-constructed weather enclosure erected to enable year-round work, November 5, 2025. The Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is home to the USACE Radiological Health Physics Regional Center of Expertise, which provides radiation safety and technical support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies at home and abroad and began the decommissioning and dismantlement of SM-1A in 2024.
