A newly-completed weather enclosure stands above the remaining structure of the former SM-1A nuclear power plant on Fort Greely, Alaska, November 4, 2025. The weather enclosure was constructed to enable safe work year-round, even during winter. The Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is home to the USACE Radiological Health Physics Regional Center of Expertise, who provides radiation safety and technical support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies at home and abroad and began the decommissioning and dismantlement of SM-1A in 2024.
