The interior of the newly-completed weather enclosure is visible above the remaining structures of the former SM-1A nuclear power plant on Fort Greely, Alaska, as teams install additional insulation, November 5, 2025. The weather enclosure was constructed to enable safe work year-round, even during winter, and additional containment will be constructed over the remaining elements when demolition work continues inside the enclosure. The Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is home to the USACE Radiological Health Physics Regional Center of Expertise, which provides radiation safety and technical support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies at home and abroad and began the decommissioning and dismantlement of SM-1A in 2024.
