U.S. Army and World War II veteran Warren Goss attends an International D-Day Remembrance Ceremony at the Utah Beach American Memorial, June 6, 2025, Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Normandy, France. Goss enlisted in the Army in 1943 at age 18 and became a key member of the 531st Engineer Shore Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. His service exemplifies the courage of the "Greatest Generation," particularly in the European Theater, where he participated in one of the war's most pivotal operations: the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He landed in the first waves on Utah Beach, one of the five Allied landing zones in Normandy, France. Utah Beach saw relatively lighter resistance compared to Omaha, but Goss's unit still faced perilous conditions, including strong currents that shifted landings about 2 kilometers south of the planned site, flooded marshes, and German defenses.
