Marine Lance Cpl. Zachary E. Freeman, assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 3's Burma humanitarian assistance/disaster relief team, said he had no problems moving from an exercise to a real world operation. "We thought we were just here on an exercise to Thailand," Freeman said. "All of a sudden, a natural disaster strikes. Myself and my mentors volunteered to stay back to do this; it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we didn't want to pass it up." Freeman and other CLR-3 Marines, already deployed to Thailand for Exercise Cobra Gold 2008, shifted their efforts to relief operations after Cyclone Nargis struck Burma, May 2, killing and displacing thousands of people. Freeman, 21, is a Gilmer, Texas native, who graduated from Harmony High School in 2005.
