Alan Dierking describes some of the photos and other items that belonged to his father, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Russell A. Dierking, alongside Keiko Ziak, a co-founder of the Obon Society, while meeting with staff members of the Astoria-based Obon Society at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon, on March 7, 2025. During the meeting, Dierking returned a captured WWII flag that his father brought home from the war in 1945. The Obon Society’s mission is to facilitate the return of captured WWII flags to Japanese descendants of the soldiers who carried them off to war as send-off gifts.
