Keiko Ziak, a co-founder of the Obon Society, reviews some of the photographs that belong to Alan Dierking and were brought home from WWII by his father, Staff Sgt. Russell A. Dierking during a meeting with staff members of the Astoria-based Obon Society at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon, on March 7, 2025. During the meeting, Dierking returned a captured WWII flag that his father brought home from the war in 1945. The Obon Society’s mission is to facilitate the return of captured WWII flags to Japanese descendants of the soldiers who carried them off to war as send-off gifts.
