NSTI conducts Live Flare Fire Evolution

A Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI) staff member undergoes refresher training for the Mk 124 flare, June 22. The Mk 124 was developed to give personnel operating in a marine or survival situation the ability to signal rescue crew day or night with either smoke or flame signals. The flame signal shown here is used at night to give crews the best chance possible at spotting the survivor in an otherwise dark environment. NSTI, a detachment of NMOTC, specializes in training the pilots, aircrew, and service members who support other specialized communities in survival skills and technique to survive aviation emergencies. Students and service members who complete training and courses will be equipped, with an understanding of stressors placed on the body, the rigors of egress and techniques for survival in situations of hostile and austere environments. Navy Medicine Operational Training Command (NMOTC) is comprised of six nationwide detachments that offer specialized medical training in the fields of aviation, aviation survival, surface and undersea warfare, expeditionary and special operations medicine.
