    NMOTC commemorates 125 years of Corpsman Service

    Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Deandra Nelson assigned to the Hospital Corpsman Trauma Training (HMTT) program of NMOTC delivers a commemoration speech detailing the service and sacrifice of the Navy’s Hospital Corpsman in the main conference room of NMOTC HQ, June 20. Hospital Corpsman are enlisted medical sailors who fill critical roles by serving in Marine units, military treatment facilities, and aboard submarines and surface ships as independent duty corpsman. The Hospital Corps was established on June 17, 1898, and comprises more than 26,000 active duty and reserve hospital corpsman that practice or train in 40 technical specialties. The birthday celebrates the establishment of the hospital corpsman rating in the Navy and marks 125 years of active service to the military and the nation. Navy Medicine Operational Training Command (NMOTC) trains all Independent Duty Corpsmen (IDCs) in the Navy and is a critical stop for Corpsman in their careers. NMOTC is comprised of six nationwide detachments and numerous programs that offer specialized medical training to not only Corpsman but pilots, aircrew, Sailors and Marines (both from the enlisted and officer communities) in the fields of aviation, aviation survival, surface and undersea warfare, expeditionary and special operations medicine.
