NSTI conducts Live Flare Fire Evolution

A Naval Survival Training Institute staff member undergoes refresher training for the Mk 79 pen flare, June 22. The Mk 79 was developed for pilots and aircrew as a compact multi-use survival flare for survival situations where portability and compact size were key. Periodically personnel must undergo live refresher training to ensure proper deployment. With a student throughput exceeding 14,000 students annually the staff and instructors at NSTI also undergo training to ensure they are using the proper techniques to train students that pass through the Aviation Survival Training Centers (ASTC) and out to the Fleet. NSTI, a detachment of NMOTC, specializes in training the pilots, aircrew, and service members who support other specialized communities in survival skills and technique to survive aviation emergencies. Students and service members who complete training and courses will be equipped, with an understanding of stressors placed on the body, the rigors of egress and techniques for survival in situations of hostile and austere environments. Navy Medicine Operational Training Command (NMOTC) is comprised of six nationwide detachments that offer specialized medical training in the fields of aviation, aviation survival, surface and undersea warfare, expeditionary and special operations medicine.
