AFRICATOWN, Ala. (Feb. 1, 2020) A typical house in the impoverished town of Africatown, Ala. Originally built in 1860, the north Mobile neighborhood has a significantly higher poverty rate than the nearby big city of Mobile. In 2019, the schooner Clotilda, the last know ship to bring African slaves to the U.S., was discovered. This recent discovery has brought with it the hope of revival to the town, which was founded by African captives of the Clotilda. Recently, Navy Recruiting Command and Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit Sailors have conducted community service and volunteer projects to help further revitalize the town.
